A protest in Tehran, December 2009

Iran Solidarity Melbourne has initiated a national day of protest to coincide with the Islamic Republic’s symbolically significant day of “22 Bahman” (anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution).
We are calling upon all Iranians and their friends living in Australia to converge on the doorstep of the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Canberra on Friday 12 February 2010. The protest aims to show this government that, no matter where it operates, the Iranian people will be there to show our opposition to its inhumane and dictatorial ways, which have driven millions of Iranians into exile while holding the rest of the nation hostage inside Iran for the last 30 years.
Why we are targeting the embassy
As the official representative of the Iranian government in Australia, the Iranian embassy operates as an organ of propaganda for the Iranian Government and officially endorses all its inhumane practices and policies. As freedom-loving people it is our duty to become active and stand up to this machine of lies and espionage, and show the world that the unelected Iranian government does not represent the Iranian people. Even more importantly, we oppose the representatives of this criminal regime operating freely and propagating their terroristic ways in this country.
In what is quickly becoming a trend, several Iranian diplomats around the world have resigned to protest the violent crackdown on the pro-democracy movement inside Iran. We in Iran Solidarity Melbourne aim to keep up this pressure on top representatives of the Iranian regime. In a move coordinated with Iranians around the world, we will be presenting Mahmoud Movahhedi, the Iranian ambassador to Australia, with a petition asking him to resign. It is our intention to present this petition in the presence of as many Iranians and our allies as possible.
So we urge all freedom-loving and progressive people and groups, regardless of background and political affiliations, to join us in this day of action.
Iran Solidarity will be holding a public meeting to prepare for the trip and to sign people up for it. To secure your place on the bus we recommend that you attend this meeting, which will be held at Swinburne University, Hawthorn at 5pm on Sunday 7 February (come to AD Building, Level 2, Room 224).
